MUST READ: TOILET DISEASE: CAUSES, PREVENTION AND CURE. PART 2

                                                                  PREVENTION OF TOILET INFECTION

Toilet disease is highly preventable. From my experience as a medical personnel, I have discovered that prevention is far better than cure. Preventing a particular disease will save you a lot of headache. Here is how to prevent Toilet infection:

1.       Stop V*ginal Douching: You might want to ask “how do I keep my V*ginal clean”? Simple, Just clean your V*ginal when bathing when bathing if you have the feeling that you are unclean. The use of antiseptics and salts, harm your vagina. In short, never douche!

2.       Always change your inner-wears at least once daily.

3.       Don’t squat while urinating. You can just bend or stand while urinating to avoid getting infection through urine splashing.

4.       Never share your inner wears e.g. pants with other ladies.

5.       Use cotton inner-wears. This will absorb moist easily than the nylon pants. And this will also allow your v*ginal to breath.

6.       Do not spay perfume on your V*ginal.

7.       Stick to one sexual partner.

TREATMENT OF TOILET (V*GINAL) INFECTIONS

Let me sound a note of warning here. Whenever you notice any symptoms relating to the ones described in our previous post, do not self-medicate. Make sure you visit your nearest hospital for proper testing and diagnosis.

Let me just mention some basic ways of treating a V*ginal infection.

1.      Bacterial vaginosis: For the treatment of Bacterial Vaginosis, the following antibiotics are used, such as:

-Metronidazole (Flagyl) if you are taking alcohol, stop and finish the treatment with Metronidazole first, because alcohol increases the side effects associated with Metronidazole. If your pregnancy has not pass 3 months, do not take metronidazole because it can be harmful to your baby's mental health.

- Clindamycin (Cleocin). It is recommended that you treat it because the infection will not go on its own unless you treat it and it keeps increasing in severity the more you refuse treating it. Clindamycin or Metronidazole may cause V*ginal itching or discharge so take note. If you have Bacterial Vaginosis, there is no need for you to treat your male partner because it is not a Sexually transmitted disease and the bacterial love living in the vagina and not in the penis. (This is only applicable to Bacterial Vaginosis and not to all Toilet (V*ginal) Infections.)

2.      Trichomoniasis: The drug of choice in treating Trichomoniasis is Metronidazole. A single does is usually Ok for treatment but you should avoid Alcohol to prevent severe nausea and vomiting. You and your sex partners are required to be treated with the medicine even if they do not have signs of the disease because it can be transmitted from a woman to the male partner and not just women. It is a sexually transmitted infection. SO, this one is not from toilet seats or anything related to Toilets. The organism responsible for this is called Trichomonas V*ginalis. Trichomoniasis is primarily an infection that affects the sexual organs of reproduction and urination. The Vagina of the women is affected mostly whereas the urethra is most commonly affected in Males (So this means that Men can also have 'Toilet Infections' too because this type is a sexually transmitted infection, so I still insist that the word "Toilet Infection" is not appropriate).

3.      Yeast infection: Yeast infections are treated usually but not always with V*ginal creams and V*ginal applications rather than oral medication; and Pregnant women are usually treated for a longer period than non-pregnant women (because pregnant women have low immunity compared to their non-pregnant counterparts) and must be closely monitored. Severe infections(when the infections prevent you from doing your daily activities or affecting your social life) are treated with Oral single dose of anti-fungal drug which could include: -

Fluconazole (Diflucan) or - Itraconazole (Sporanox).

These drugs like I said are taken once or for 3-5 days with the same cure rates. However, care must be taken because they might cause liver problems and the symptoms of liver problems may manifest with yellowish skin, yellowish eyes, and/or pale stools. If you begin to notice any of these signs, STOP taking the drug and see your doctor immediately. Less severe infections, are treated with drugs such as:

V*ginal tablet: in which the tablet is inserted into the Vagina and has been found to be effective or

Cream application using an applicator stick: in which a cream is used for 7 to 14 days. Your choice of tablet or cream depends on your convenience or availability of the drug. Please note that even if the symptoms disappear after the first day, continue with the drug for about 7 days or till 14 days depending on your doctor’s prescription so as to properly and completely treat the infection and to prevent it from re-surfacing again. Examples of these drugs are: -

- Nystatin (Mycostatin) - can be tablet or cream.

- Miconazole (Monistat-7, M-Zole) - can be tablet or cream and

- Clotrimazole (Mycelex, Gyne-Lotrimin) can be tablet or cream - This is more effective. In some cases, a single dose of medication has been shown to clear up yeast infections, (but continue with treatment for at least 7days). In other cases, a longer course of medication (3 days or 7 days) might be prescribed. For individuals that keep having infections (more than 4 times in a year) even after treatment, this is termed as "Recurrent infection". This type is treated with oral Fluconazole and Itraconazole or V*ginal clotrimazole might be needed for a period of six (6) months.

                        COMPLICATION OF TOILET INFECTION

If toilet infection is not properly treated, it can lead to many complication

1.      Infertility

2.      And in pregnant women with toilet infection, it can affect your baby leading to premature birth and low birth weight.

3.      It can also predispose you to other diseases

  3. I think ladies should consider individual hygiene potentially. Washed and clean panty liners can be added to our routine to shield oneself from getting tainted or re-contaminated. Albeit most underwear liners out there just help to shield our under wears from getting recolored with the vaginal release.
